Google is bringing back the Android Dev Summit on October 28-29 — the first focused Android developer conference since 2022. The event will be held at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, with a satellite "Extended" event in London.

Android 18 on the Agenda

The session lineup includes the first public look at Android 18 features. A session titled "Elevate your apps with the latest graphics features in Jetpack Compose and Android 18" promises mesh gradients, progressive blurs, and other visual capabilities coming to the platform, with attention to performance, battery life, and frame rates.

These are developer-facing features, not consumer ones — they affect what app developers can build, not what appears on a phone's settings screen. But mesh gradients and progressive blurs in Jetpack Compose would bring Android's UI toolkit closer to what SwiftUI already offers on iOS, and the emphasis on performance suggests Google is addressing the runtime cost that has historically made rich visual effects impractical on lower-end hardware.

Four Tracks

The conference spans four tracks: AI experiences, Android XR, Apps foundation, and Tools and performance. The AI and XR tracks reflect Google's current priorities — Gemini integration and the push toward mixed reality through Android XR. The Apps foundation track is where the Android 18 session sits.

Why It Was Gone

Google stopped holding the standalone Android Dev Summit after 2022, folding Android-specific content into Google I/O and smaller online events. Bringing it back as an in-person conference signals that Android's developer story has grown complex enough to need its own stage — between Jetpack Compose, Kotlin Multiplatform, Android XR, and the expanding Android surface area across phones, tablets, cars, and now the Googlebook laptop platform, I/O's single-day Android block was getting crowded.

Registration details have not been announced. The October 28-29 date places the summit after the expected Pixel hardware event and before the holiday developer push.
