Google launched Googlebook on September 21 — a new laptop category running an Android-based operating system designed to pair with Android phones. Five launch partners — Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo — have announced models starting at $899, with US shipments beginning October 4.

Not a Chromebook

Googlebook OS is built on Android, not ChromeOS. Google developed it under the codename AluminiumOS, and it runs the full Android app ecosystem alongside desktop-grade windowing, keyboard shortcuts, and multi-monitor support. Every Googlebook ships with a free year of Google AI Pro for on-device AI features.

The distinction matters. Chromebooks run a browser-first OS with Android app support bolted on. Googlebooks run Android natively with a desktop shell designed for laptop hardware — trackpad gestures, resizable windows, and file management built around the same storage and sync layer as Android phones.

The Hardware

All five launch models share a common spec floor: 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, touchscreens, and backlit keyboards. Displays reach up to 2.8K OLED. Processors split between Intel Core Ultra and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chips. Battery life is rated up to 14 hours. Build materials are aluminum, magnesium alloy, or carbon fiber — no plastic.

The Lenovo Googlebook 15 is the largest in the lineup. Pricing ranges from $899 for the base configurations to above $1,000 for higher-end models with OLED displays.

Phone Pairing

The pitch is seamless continuity between an Android phone and a Googlebook laptop. Notifications, clipboard, messages, and files sync automatically. Apps installed on the phone appear on the laptop. Calls and texts route through the Googlebook when it is nearby. Google promises up to 10 years of updates — matching the longest support windows in the industry.

Pre-Orders and Availability

Pre-orders are open now through the Google Store and Best Buy. The first US shipments arrive October 4. International availability has not been announced.
