Google's September 2026 Pixel update is breaking lock screen authentication for some owners. Pattern and PIN unlock methods are reportedly malfunctioning after the update, leaving users locked out of their phones with a factory reset as the only documented fix.

What Is Happening

Pixel 10 Pro XL owners report that pattern unlock resets after only two dots — before the user finishes drawing their pattern. Pixel 8a and Pixel 8 Pro owners are seeing similar issues with PIN entry, where the lock screen registers an incorrect entry after a single digit is pressed.

In one documented case, a Pixel 8a user tried restarting, booting into Safe Mode, cleaning the screen, connecting a USB mouse through an adapter, and sideloading the same Android build. Nothing worked. A factory reset was the only way back in.

Google Is Aware

Google is actively reaching out to affected users in Reddit threads, which confirms the company is tracking the issue. Google's own support page directs locked-out owners toward erasing the phone — with the consolation that anything backed up to a Google Account can be restored afterward.

The bug does not appear to be widespread. Reports so far come from a limited number of users across multiple Pixel models, suggesting the issue is not device-specific but may depend on a particular lock screen configuration or timing during the update process. Pixel owners are also dealing with a separate NFC bug that breaks Google Wallet tap-to-pay and transit.

What to Do

If your Pixel phone still unlocks normally after the September update, no action is needed. If you are experiencing the issue, Google's official guidance is a factory reset through recovery mode — power off, then hold Power and Volume Down to access the bootloader, then select Recovery Mode and use the on-screen options to wipe the device.
