Apple says the iPhone Duo has a replaceable cover layer on its folding display, a design meant to help with the crease that foldable screens develop over time. The detail comes from Apple's Kate Bergeron, as reported by 9to5Mac.

It is the clearest sign yet of how Apple plans to handle the weak point of every foldable.

What the layer sits on

The inner display is a stack of 10 ultrathin layers. The cover layer is a nano-textured polymer that is reported to be up to 40 percent stiffer than standard materials.

Glass sits above and below the folding panel, and a titanium plate is part of the stack as well. The cover layer is the piece Apple says can be replaced.

What Apple has not said

The summary leaves out the practical details. We had no word on how the cover layer is replaced, who does it or what it costs when this article first ran. Update: Apple's service page has since listed the price, which we cover in the iPhone Duo screen layer swap report.

The competition is the other foldable phones on the market, including Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 9. A replaceable top layer is one way for Apple to answer the question buyers ask first about any folding screen: what happens after a year or two of use.

Shot on iPhone Duo

Apple is also showing off the Duo's cameras. It commissioned photographers Jake Michaels and Jason Nocito for a "Shot on iPhone Duo" carousel on its Instagram account. It continues the long-running Shot on iPhone series.
