Pixel Face Unlock's Dark Fix May Be the Screen, Not IR
Everyone expects infrared to fix Pixel Face Unlock in the dark. Android 17 QPR3 code reportedly points to your own screen instead. It is unfinished.
Google has released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 4 for Pixel devices, adding a new Notification Intelligence feature and status bar customization options two weeks after Beta 3's sizable update.
The headline addition is Notification Intelligence, a system-level feature that uses on-device AI to analyze and prioritize incoming notifications. Google has been expanding its use of the word "Intelligence" across Android 17 — Gemini Intelligence on the Pixel 11 series, Android System Intelligence, and Device Intelligence all debuted in recent months. Notification Intelligence is the latest addition to that family.
Beta 4 also introduces new settings for the status bar, letting users control which notification and system icons appear at the top of the screen. The feature gives users more granular control over status bar clutter — a common complaint on Android devices with heavy notification loads.
The build includes numerous bug fixes for Pixel devices, continuing the QPR2 cycle that began with Beta 1 in July. The Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL are not yet compatible, but Google says support is coming "soon."
The QPR2 beta cycle previews the Q4 2026 update scheduled for a stable December release. Pixel owners enrolled in the Android Beta Program can grab the OTA now.
